Norman Shankle

American Tenor Norman Shankle has enjoyed success singing the leading Mozart tenor roles including Idomeneo and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with Stattstheater Stuttgart, Verona and Reggio Emilia, Zaide with Vienna Festwochen, the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, and La Finta Giardiniera with Opernhaus Zurich. In the 2010-2011 season he will make his Dresden Semperoper debut as Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, the Berlin Komische Oper as Ernesto in Don Pasquale and as Renaud in Gluck’s Armide, the Michigan Opera Theatre as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, and he will return to Palm Beach Opera as Ferrando in Così fan tutte. Engagements in his 2009-2010 season included his Palm Beach Opera debut singing the role of Cassio in Verdi’s Otello, his Dallas Opera debut as Ernesto in Don Pasquale, he sang Handel’s Messiah with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and he sang the role of Ferrando with Opera Grand Rapids. In the 2008-2009 season he returned to Amsterdam as Ferrando at the Netherlands Opera and Ernesto at Le Grand Théâtre de Genève.

His formative years as a singer were connected with the San Francisco Opera as a Merola Opera Program participant and an SFO Adler Fellow. He officially made his company debut as Valletto in L'incoronazione di Poppea in the summer of 1998 and subsequently appeared in Tristan und Isolde, Don Carlo, and Betrothal in a Monastery during the 1998-1999 season, and Louise, Lucia di Lammermoor, Idomeneo and Don Giovanni in the 1999-2000 season. In 2001, Norman was selected as a winner of the distinguished ARIA award. Other awards include a 1999 Richard Tucker Career Grant, and the 1998 McAllister Award.

Norman's operatic repertory encompasses major operatic roles in operas including Tito in La Clemenza di Tito, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Italian Tenor in Der Rosenkavalier, Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Belfiore in La Finta Giardinera. Recently, he has appeared with Opera Boston as Admete in Alceste, and in the Haydn Festival's L'Orfeo et Eurdice.

Concert engagements have included Carlo in Rossini's Armida and Laios in Oedipe at Edinburgh International Festival, Handel's Saul conducted by René Jacobs at Palais de Beaux Arts, Brussels, Tito in La Clemenza di Tito with the Münchener Kammerorchester, Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings with the International Bach Akademie, Messiah with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Britten's War Requiem with the San Francisco Choral Society, as well as engagements with the Essen Philharmonic, Choral Arts Society of Washington, and New Century Chamber Orchestra.
